The recipient of five National Film Awards, 87-year old renowned director Kasinadhuni Viswanath was on 24 April 2017 named for the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award for outstanding contribution to the film industry. He is a celebrated filmmaker in Telugu film industry but has also been active in Tamil and Hindi cinema. He becomes the 48th recipient of the award, which consists of a golden lotus, a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakhs and a shawl.

Rafael Nadal, a Spanish professional tennis player, has won the Men’s Singles title of Monte Carlo Masters Tennis tournament. With this, Rafael claimed a record 10th Monte Carlo Masters title. Beside this, India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Uruguayan partner Pablo Cuevas won lifted the men’s doubles crown at the Monte Carlo Masters .

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP leader and Assam Badminton Association President, has been appointed the new interim President of Badminton Association of India (BAI).

Peggy Whitson on 24 April 2017 broke the previous record set by Jeff Williams who had spent a total of 534 days in space (cumulatively) by a US astronaut. When she will return from ISS in September 2017, she would have accumulated more than 600 days in space.




On 23 April 2017, the third meeting of NITI Aayog’s Governing Council was held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in which a precursor of the ambitious ‘15-year Vision Document’ to accelerate the country’s economic development was presented. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting was attended by Chief Ministers of all states except West Bengal and Delhi.

The General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re), the wholly-owned by the government, has become the first re-insurer to open an office at India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO) became the first public sector undertaking (PSU) to be divested by the Union Govt. in the current fiscal (2017-18) as the govt. raised over Rs.1,200 crore through the sale of 9.2% stake in it.

Madhya Pradesh will be awarded with the Union Government’s Krishi Karman Award for 2015-16 for wheat production. It is the fifth consecutive year that Madhya Pradesh will be conferred with the prestigious Krishi Karman Award. The award instituted by the Union Agriculture Ministry carries a trophy, citation and cash prize of Rs. 2 crore.

In an important order, the Supreme Court set a bench of Justices R. Banumathi and M. M. Santanagoudar for maintenance to be paid by a husband to his estranged wife, stating that 25% of his net salary might constitute a “just and proper” amount as alimony.

India’s first-ever ‘village of books’ will open at Bhilar village in Maharashtra on May 4, 2017 to promote tourism and Marathi language. The village is roughly 8 km away from the hill station of Panchgani.

In one of the deadliest attacks on security forces, Maoists killed 25 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and injured seven in Chhattisgarh on 24 April 2017. This attack took place in Sukma which is Maoist-infested district of the state.

African countries Ghana, Kenya and Malawi have been chosen to test the world’s first malaria vaccine, as announced by the WHO on 24 April 2017. The malaria vaccine has been developed by pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. Malaria remains one of the world’s most stubborn health challenges, infecting more than 20 crore people every year and killing about 5 lakh, most of them children in Africa.

According to the data disclosed by Oil Ministry’s Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC), India has replaced Japan as the world’s second-largest importer of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). China remains the world’s top importer.

At the 2nd edition of the Golf Industry Association (GIA) Awards, Shiv Shankar Prasad Chawrasia from India has won the award for the 2016 Men’s Player of the Year, while Aditi Ashok bagged the Outstanding achievement as a Player award.

Indian Social activist Prafulla Samantra became sixth Indian to be bestowed with the Goldman Environmental Prize, as was announced on 23 April 2017. This prize awarded annually to grassroots environmental activists, one from each of the world’s six geographic regions and is often called ‘Green Nobel’.

Athens, the capital of Greece, has been designated as the UNESCO World Book Capital 2018 by Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO, in Paris. The city Athens was chosen for the quality of its activities, supported by the entire book industry. At present, Conakry (the capital of the Republic of Guinea) is the World Book Capital for 2017.





Indian Pankaj Advani won his seventh Asian title by defeating Sourav Kothari in final of the Asian Billiards Championship – 2017. In recognition of his achievements, the government of India has bestowed several awards upon Advani – Arjuna Award in 2004. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2006, and Padma Shri in 2009. Advani won the 2014 IBSF World 6 – Red Snooker Championship, on his debut in that discipline.

The 2017 BRICS Film Festival will be held in Sichuan, China from June 23 to 27. The first BRICS Film Festival was held in New Delhi, India in September 2016.

Malaysia Airlines will become the world’s first airline to track its flights with the help of satellites by 2018.

From 1 May 2017, neither state nor central government can nominate any official to use red beacons.The government also decided to make amendments to the rules governing the use of blue beacons and said they can only be used by vehicles like ambulances, fire tenders and police cars, but only in cases of emergency as notified by the government.

India and South Korea has recently signed an agreement to firm up bilateral cooperation in defence shipbuilding. The agreement will form the basis of defence cooperation between the two countries in shipbuilding.

The cricket icon Kapil Dev will be honoured with the 75th Master Dinanath Mangeshkar award on April 24, 2017 for his outstanding contribution to Indian Cricket. Beside this, Actor Aamir Khan will be honoured with the Vishesh Puraskar for Best Film “Dangal”.

On 19 April 2017, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced that it will introduce e-sports (video gaming) to the official program of the Asian Games at Hangzhou, China. It will also be a demonstration sport at the 2018 Asian Games in Palembang, Indonesia.

The Sahitya Akademi has recently declared its 2016 Translation Prize in English language to Sri Aniruddhan Vasudevan for his book titled “One Part Woman”.

The Visakhapatnam-Kirandul passenger train became the first train in the country to have a vistadome railway coach as the trial run of this coach was flagged-off by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu through video conference at the Visakhapatnam Railway Station on 16 April 2017.The most unique feature of Vistadome coach is that it has transparent glasses installed on its roof. Other features of this state-of-the-art coach are LED lights, rotable seats and GPS based info system, etc.

German racing driver Sebastian Vettel has won the 2017 Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix tournament at Bahrain International Circuit in Bahrain.

The first-ever Nepal-China joint military exercise ‘Sagarmatha Friendship-2017’ has started at Kathmandu, Nepal from April 17, 2017 with a special focus on counter- terrorism and disaster management.

GBU-43 is the official name of the massive bomb that was dropped on by the United States on Afghanistan as it targeted a series of caves used by Islamic State militants in the country’s Nangarhar province. At least 36 persons were killed in the attack. It is one of the largest non-nuclear bombs ever used in the battlefield.

Indian badminton player B. Sai Praneeth defeated the more fancied fellow Indian Kidambi Srikanth in the men’s singles final of Singapore Open super series badminton tournament to clinch his maiden superseries title on 16 April 2017.On the other hand women’s singles title was won by world no.1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei.

Rayappa Ramappa Hanchinal has been bestowed with the 6th edition of prestigious M.S. Swaminathan Award for contribution in the field of agriculture. It carries a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh, a medal and citation. He is the Chairperson of Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Authority, New Delhi.

The growth in bank credit during 2016-17 stood at 5.1%, as was disclosed in the data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) during April 2017. 

State Bank of India (SBI), that gained 2% to reach Rs. 296 levels on 18 April 2017, became the most valued PSU by market capitalisation (m-cap).

The Rajasthan government has recently signed a reworked MoU with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) for the Rs 43,129 crore Barmer refinery. The Barmer refinery will be the first in the country to produce BS-6 standard fuel.

‘Visa 457’ is the name of the Australian visa programme used by over 95,000 temporary foreign workers (majority of them Indians), that was abolished by the Australian Government on 18 April 2017. This visa programme was extremely popular amongst Indian workers.

India gained one place to get 43rdspot in the Huawei Global Connectivity Index (GCI) for 2017. US topped the list with Singapore and Sweden a close second and third.

The Union Minister of Human Resource and Development (HRD) Prakash Javadekar has launched the portal and mobile app “Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA)” in New Delhi on April 17, 2017. The portal will act as a one-stop one-stop destination for higher education plans, decisions and information on resources of states.

According to the data of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), RBL Bank Ltd. on 10 April 2017 entered the list of India’s 10 most valuable banks. RBL Bank replaced IDFC Bank Ltd in the elite club.HDFC Bank Ltd, India’s most profitable bank, is the most valuable bank in India followed by State Bank of India and ICICI Bank Ltd.

Indian naval officer Kulbushan Jadhav’s death sentence was confirmed by the Pakistani Chief Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on 10 April 2017. They have alleged that he was held for espionage and sabotage activities against Pakistan.

The World Bank (WB) has approved a $375 million loan to India’s first waterway project “National Waterway (NW) 1”. The waterway project is to create a water transport fairway on a 1,360-km stretch of the Ganga River between Varanasi and Haldia.

President Pranab Mukherjee on 9 April 2017 picked up the lucky winners from the 100thdraw of lots under digital payments promotion schemes at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Customer of Central Bank of India won the Rs. 1 crore top prize for undertaking a digital transaction of Rs. 1,590. These schemes are being implemented by the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI).

India has recently signed sport partnership agreement with Australia to increase cooperation in sports.

Tesla Inc. overtook General Motors on 10 April 2017 to become the most valuable US car maker with the largest market capitalization. Its market value of $50.887 billion exceeded GM’s by about $1 million.

‘BharatKeVeer’ is the name of the ambitious application and web portal that was launched by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on 9 April 2017 with the objective to enable willing donors to contribute towards the family of a braveheart who sacrificed his/her life in line of duty. To ensure maximum coverage, a cap of Rs. 15 lakh is imposed on donation and donors will be alerted if amount exceeds.

The Haryana government has recently launched ‘Operation Durga’ campaign to ensure women safety in the state. The teams will visit public places such as schools, colleges, bus stands and railway stations and including eve teasing, vulgar comments, stalking and other similar activities.

TAL Manufacturing Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors, on 11 April 2017 launched India’s first industrial-articulated robot and it goes by the name “BRABO”.

Former Union Minister and former Mayor of Lucknow Akhilesh Das Gupta passed away on 12 April 2017. Currently he was the President of Badminton Association of India (BAI) from 2011.

19-years old Malala Yousafzai, Nobel Peace laureate, has become only the 6th person to receive honorary Canadian citizenship for advocating girls’ education. She is the youngest to receive honorary Canadian citizenship. She also previously granted to five others including Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama and Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi.

President Pranab Mukherjee on 13 April 2017 gave his approval to four supporting pieces of legislation related to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) that will pave the way for the roll out of ‘one nation, one tax’ regime from 1 July 2017. These bills are – a) The Central GST Act, 2017 b) The Integrated GST Act, 2017 c) The GST (Compensation to States) Act, 2017 and d) The Union Territory GST Act, 2017.

Achim Steiner from Germany, an expert in environmental issues and politics, has been named as the new administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The UNDP focuses on poverty reduction, HIV/AIDS, democratic governance, energy and environment, social development, and crisis prevention and recovery. The headquarters of UNDP is located in New York, United States.

On 12 April 2017 the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved listing of 11 central public sector enterprises (CPSEs) in the equity market. The mandated public shareholding is 25% in profitable CPSEs, which is being adhered to by this listing.

German city Dusseldorf hosted the first edition of G20 Ministerial Meet on Digital Economy on 6-7 April 2017. The theme was ‘Digitalisation: Policies for a Digital Future’. Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad represented India in the meet.
