Vice President to visit participate in 2nd World Hindu Congress

The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu to visit United States of America on September 8-9, 2018 to address the 2nd World Hindu Congress being held in Chicago on the occasion of 125th Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s Historic Speech at the Parliament of the World's Religions in 1893. It is held once every four years.

 

Dr Arif Alvi elected as 13th President of Pakistan

Dr Arif ur Rehman Alvi (69) was elected as 13th President of Pakistan. He is close ally of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and one of founding members of ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. He will take oath of office of President on September 9, 2018.

 

Puducherry bags top position in National Clean School Award given by HRD Ministry

Union Territory of Puducherry has bagged top position in National Clean School Award after seven schools from Puducherry were awarded for cleanliness. As many as 52 schools from across the country were bestowed with National Clean School Award in recognition of their efforts in carrying forward Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

 

WB Government denies ‘stop promotion’ rumour on social media

The West Bengal government on September 4, 2018 denied rumours doing the rounds on social media that it has instructed all departments to stop promotion of its employees till the Lok Sabha elections, which are due in 2019.

 

India on track to buy 18 bullet trains from Japan for Rs 7,000 crore

India will purchase 18 bullet train sets from Japan at a total cost of about Rs 7,000 crore in a deal that includes a pledge to transfer technology for local production. Each train will have 10 coaches and would be able to cruise at the speed of 350 km per hour. The country’s first bullet train is likely to start running between Mumbai and Ahmedabad by the end of 2022.

 

TCS becomes 2nd Indian company to cross Rs. 8 trillion market cap

Mumbai-headquartered Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) became only the second Indian company to cross Rs.8 trillion (Rs 8 lakh crore) in market capitalisation after Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries.

 

Amazon hits USD 1 trillion market capitalisation after Apple

World’s richest man Jeff Bezos-led e-commerce major Amazon became the 2nd publicly traded US company to hit $1 trillion in market capitalisation after iPhone maker Apple. Amazon stock has more than doubled in the last 12 months and has gained more than 70% in 2018.

 

Conference on E-Mobility in Indian Railways held in New Delhi

The main aim is to discuss strategies for future of mobility in India and to make Indian Railways more efficient, greener and a preferred mode of transport. It acted as a common platform for project developers and other stakeholders. Minister of State for Railways, Manoj Sinha was the chief guest of the conference. Minister of State for Railways, Rajen Gohain, was the Guest of Honour.

 

Kazakhstan joint military exercise KAZIND to be held in Otar

India, Kazakhstan joint army exercise KAZIND will be conducted between Indian and Kazakhstan Army in Otar region, Kazakhstan from 10 to 23 September 2018. This will be third joint military exercise between two countries which have history of extensive cooperation in defence arena. The second edition of the exercise was held in India in 2017.

Ukraine-NATO Joint Military Exercises

Ukraine launched joint military exercises with the United States and a string of other NATO countries. The annual Rapid Trident military exercises, taking place in the western Ukrainian village of Starychi from September 2nd to 15th, involve some 2,200 soldiers from 14 countries. The drills start a week before Russia holds its biggest military exercises VOSTOK 2018 since the Cold War, in the east of the country and with the participation of China and Mongolia.

 

First set of Indian shooters to secure quota places for 2020 Olympics

Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela have become the first set of Indian shooters to secure quota places for the 2020 Olympics. Moudgil finished second on the podium and won a silver in the women's 10m air rifle event of the International Shooting Sport Federation's (ISSF) World Championship in Changwon, South Korea. Chandela finished fourth in the same event.

 

Happy Teachers Day 2018

Teacher’s Day is celebrated on September 5 every year in India. This date marks the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was the first vice-president of India. The first Teacher’s Day was celebrated in the year 1962.

The main objective of the strategy is to plan for the citizens of India first, rather than focussing on vehicles alone, by providing sustainable mobility and accessibility. The announcement was made at a function on Future Mobility Summit-2018 in New Delhi.

 

UAE revealed the names of the 2 astronauts for the space mission

The United Arab Emirates has disclosed its first two astronauts to go on a mission to the International Space Station. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed al-Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates named the new astronauts as Hazza al-Mansouri, 34-year-old, and Sultan al-Neyadi, 37-year-old. UAE has announced its plans to become the first Arab country to send an unmanned probe to orbit Mars by 2021. The probe is named as “Hope”.

 

Jharkhand Government renames town and railway station after Bansidhar temple of Lord Krishna

The town Nagar Untari and the railway station would be renamed as Bansidhar Nagar, after Banshidhar Temple. The union government is looking at proposals for a tie-up with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).

 

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi inaugurates the first luxury cruise ‘Alaknanda’ in Varanasi

The five-star luxury cruise, a 30-metre double-decked modern line, is a startup venture of Varanasi based Nordic Cruiseline. It will run between Assi Ghat and Panchganga Ghat for a two-hour ride of around 12 km in the morning and evening.

 

Rajasthan Government To Provide Free Mobile Phones To Women Of BPL Families

In a bid to boost Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship’Digital India’ campaign, Rajasthan government will soon distribute mobile phones to women under the Bhamashah Yojana.Focused on women who fall under the Below Poverty Line (BPL), the scheme aims to transfer financial and non-financial benefits of government schemes in a transparent manner.

MoS Dr Jitendra Singh launches India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) at Jammu

The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh launched India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) in Jammu. The launch was a part of the nationwide launch of IPPBs across the country that is aimed at reaching the population of the country through utilization of the postal network for banking services.

 

West Bengal government launched mobile blood donation camp

The West Bengal government has launched a mobile blood donation camp in a red luxury bus. The bus moves from location to location, collecting blood in West Bengal. The health activists said that this move by the government is a major success as the bus is often seen in the city collecting blood samples. The service is free of cost.

 

The Nagaland government has declared the Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary as an elephant reserve

The Nagaland government has declared the Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary as an elephant reserve making it the 30th reserve for jumbos in the country. Singphan Elephant Reserve has huge tracts of forest, strategically located in contiguity with the Abhaypur Reserve Forest of Assam which is frequented by the moving herds of elephants. Elephant distribution habitat in Nagaland is a continuous stretch starting from Peren district running all along the foothills north westerly until Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh.

 

Harvard and Google joint hands and developed an Artificial Intelligence system to analyze and predict earthquake

Google and Harvard have joined hands and developed an Artificial Intelligence system in which the researchers at the university used algorithms to analyze a database of earthquakes worldwide to predict where aftershocks might happen. Aftershocks are the shocks that happen after the main earthquake takes place. The researchers teamed up with machine learning experts at Google to see if they could apply deep learning to find out the location of the aftershocks.

Commerce & Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu attended the 6th East Asia Summit- Economic Ministers’ Meeting (EAS-EMM) and 15th India-ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting (AEM) in Singapore. Singapore is currently holding the Chair of ASEAN.

In the UEFA Awards, Croatia captain Luka Modric was voted the best player in Europe. He also won the Midfielder of the Season. Real Madrid was named the best player in last season’s Champions League. The best women’s player award was won by Pernille Harder of Denmark and Wolfsburg. Best goalkeeper of the season was: Keylor Navas. Best defender of the season was: Sergio Ramos. Ronaldo won the Forward of the Season.

Idea Cellular and Vodafone completes merger to create India’s largest telecom operator

The merger of Idea Cellular and Vodafone India has been completed after it was cleared by National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). This merger has created India’s biggest telecom service provider. The merged entity is named Vodafone Idea Ltd and dislodges current market leader Bharti Airtel from top position, by its sheer size and scale. New board has been constituted for merged entity with 12 directors (including six independent directors) and Kumar Mangalam Birla as its Chairman.

 

India to house Uber elevate

Uber plans to launch ‘Uber Elevate’, an air taxi service, in 2020. Uber chose Dallas and Los Angeles as its first two launch cities in the U.S. for introducing its aerial taxi service. Uber is considering to include India in this service. It has also shortlisted five countries, namely India, Japan, Australia, Brazil and France. Uber will be operating demonstrator flights starting 2020 and beginning commercial operations in 2023 in the three cities.

 

ICICI Bank reappoints Chanda Kochhar on board of ICICI Securities

ICICI Bank has favoured the reappointment of Chanda Kochhar as a director on the board of ICICI Securities during the latter’s annual general meeting. This, for all intents and purposes, finalises Kochhar’s another stint at the ICICI Securities board, as the ICICI Bank holds 80 per cent stake in its broking arm.

 

Justice Ranjan Gogoi to take charge as Chief Justice of India

Justice Ranjan Gogoi is set to take over as the new Chief Justice of India on October 3, 2018. His name has been recommended for the post by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra to the government

 

India, Nepal sign MoU on Raxual-Kathmandu railway line

India and Nepal have signed MoU to build strategic railway line connecting Raxaul city in Bihar, India to Kathmandu, capital of Nepal. It was signed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks on all aspects of the bilateral ties with his Nepalese counterpart KP Sharma Oli on sidelines of 4th BIMSTEC Summit held in Nepal.

18th Asian Games to conclude; India finishes with biggest ever medal tally

India ended their Asian Games 2018 campaign with the highest medal tally at the tournament ever, with a total of 69 medals which includes 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze medals. India have thus surpassed their previous highest tally of 65 medals which they registered at the 2010 edition of Asiad in Guangzhou. The solitary event that is taking place on the last day of the Games today is Men's triathlon in which China, Republic of Korea and Hong Kong among others, are competing. India is not participating in Triathlon. Indian women hockey captain Rani Rampal will be the country’s flag-bearer. She has expressed her gratitude to the Indian Olympic Association and Hockey India for giving her the opportunity to lead the India contingent at the closing ceremony.

 

Nepal-Bharat Maitri Pashupati Dharamshala inaugurated in Kathmandu

Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Nepal PM K P Sharma Oli inaugurated 400-bed Nepal-Bharat Maitri Pashupati Dharamshala in Kathmandu, capital of Nepal. They handed over this dharamshala to Pashupati Area Development Trust.

 

Bengal aiming to reduce under nutrition by 2020: Mamata

Observing the National Nutrition Week, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said that the state government has adopted a multi-sectoral strategy to reduce under-nutrition and anaemia among women and children in a targeted manner by 2020.

Licence of Bhilwara Mahila Urban Co-operative Bank cancelled by RBI

The RBI has cancelled the licence of Rajasthan-based Bhilwara Mahila Urban Co-operative Bank as it does not have adequate capital and earning prospects. The RBI said it has cancelled the licence of the bank with effect from the close of business on August 31, 2018. The bank is not in a position to pay its present and future depositors in full as and when their claims accrue,” the apex bank (RBI) said.

 

The International Ayurveda Congress 2018 has been inaugurated at the Netherlands

The 4th International Ayurveda Congress (IAvC) 2018 has been inaugurated by Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Yesso Naik at Leiden, the Netherlands on September 1. The congress would focus on promotion and propagation of Ayurveda in the Netherlands and its neighbouring countries of Europe.

 

Japan’s swimmer Ikee named Asian Games’ MVP

Japan’s young swimmer Rikako Ikee was named the Indonesia Asian Games’ Most Valuable Player (MVP)after winning six gold and two silver medals. She received $50,000 in prize money.
